How to use the APA citation generator
- Pick the source type: journal article, book, chapter, web page or report.
- Paste the DOI and press Look up, or fill in the fields yourself.
- Check the preview against your source, especially author names and capital letters in the title.
- Add it to your reference list, which sorts alphabetically as APA requires.
- Copy the whole list into your document, then set a hanging indent if your template doesn't have one.
APA 7 at a glance
APA style comes from the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. The 7th edition, published in 2019, is the current one. It uses author-date citations in the text and an alphabetical reference list at the end.
APA 7 made referencing simpler than the 6th edition. You no longer give the publisher's location, DOIs are written as links (https://doi.org/…), and "Retrieved from" is only used when a page is designed to change.
APA in-text citations
Every source in your reference list needs at least one in-text citation, and the other way round. Use a parenthetical citation at the end of a sentence or a narrative citation with the author in the sentence.
- One author: (Jackson, 2019) or Jackson (2019)
- Two authors: (Smith & Patel, 2021), or Smith and Patel (2021) in a sentence
- Three or more authors: (Grady et al., 2019), from the first citation
- Group author: (World Health Organization, 2023)
- Direct quotation: (Jackson, 2019, p. 45)
Getting APA references right
Article and book titles use sentence case: only the first word, the first word after a colon and proper nouns get capitals. Journal names keep their capitals and are italic, along with the volume number.
When the author and the publisher are the same organisation, APA leaves the publisher out. The generator does this for you. For more on working with sources, read our academic writing tips.
