How to use the final grade calculator
- Enter your current grade in the course as a percentage.
- Enter the final exam's weight, from your course outline.
- Enter the course grade you're aiming for.
- Read the score you need, and the table of course grades for other final scores.
The formula
Your course grade is your current grade multiplied by the share of the course already assessed, plus your final score multiplied by the final's weight. Rearranged, the score you need is (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, with the weight as a decimal.
For example, with 80% so far, a final worth 40% and a target of 85%, you need (85 − 80 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 92.5% on the final.
When the answer is over 100% or below 0%
If you need more than 100%, the target can't be reached on the final alone. The calculator shows the highest grade you can still finish with. If you need less than 0%, you've already secured the target.
Remember that some courses need a minimum mark in the final itself, whatever your overall grade. Check your course outline for any "hurdle" requirement.
Making the most of the time you have
If the final carries a lot of weight, prioritise topics that are tested most and practise past papers under timed conditions. If coursework still counts, it's often the easier place to gain marks.
