What do I need for my target WAM?
How to use the WAM calculator
- Enter each unit's credit points and your mark out of 100, including any fails.
- Add rows for every unit that counts towards your WAM.
- Read your WAM and grade band.
- To plan ahead, enter your target WAM and the credit points you still have to complete.
How WAM is calculated
Your WAM is the average of your marks, weighted by each unit's credit points. Multiply each mark by its credit points, add the results, and divide by the total credit points. For example, marks of 65, 82 and 76 in units worth 6, 6 and 8 credit points give (390 + 492 + 608) รท 20 = 74.5.
Failed units count at most universities, using the mark you received. The University of Wollongong, for example, counts a technical fail as 49.
WAM, GPA and grade bands
WAM uses your percentage marks, while GPA converts each grade to a point on a 7-point scale first. Many Australian universities report both. Employers, honours programmes and scholarship committees often ask for WAM because it shows finer differences.
Common grade bands are High Distinction 85 and above, Distinction 75 to 84, Credit 65 to 74 and Pass 50 to 64. Some universities use different cut-offs or weight units by year level, so check your university's rules.
Planning for a target WAM
Honours programmes often set a minimum WAM, commonly around 65 to 75 depending on the course. The planning box shows the average you need across your remaining credit points to reach your target.
